MYTH vs FACT:

❌ MYTH

✅ FACT

American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)

American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) — 2025

National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA)

Youth resistance training — when properly supervised and age-appropriate — is both safe and effective.

ScienceDirect, Sleep Medicine (December 2025)

Resistance training in youth is a safe and effective way to improve strength, coordination, endurance, and ability to participate in sports.

Growth Plate Myth —

  • Growth plates soft
  • Weight pressure

Growth Plates

No well-controlled prospective study

Injury Risk: Gym vs Others

ActivityInjury Risk
🏒 Ice HockeyHIGH
🏈 Football / CricketHIGH
🛹 SkateboardingHIGH
🏀 Basketball (jumping)MODERATE
🏊 SwimmingLOW
🏋️ Supervised Resistance TrainingVERY LOW ✅

Counter-intuitive Truth:

  • ✅Motor Skill Development — proper movement patterns

Bone Health Science: Wolff's Law

"Mechanical stress → Stronger bones"

🔑 Lifelong Protection:

Loading the skeleton during childhood and adolescence is associated with higher peak bone mass, which is the single best protection against osteoporosis in later life.

Sports Injuries

Strength and neuromuscular training is among the most effective tools available for reducing sports injuries in young athletes, including knee and ACL injuries.

  • Tendons/ligaments load adaptation
  • Proprioception (body awareness)
  • Injury-prone movement patterns

Program Roadmap

Unstructured play, swimming, cycling, gymnastics

Note: Formal resistance training

Fundamental movement patterns, body control

Push-ups, squats, jumping jacks, resistance bands, climbing

Golden Rules:

  • Technique सीखना, weight नहीं
  • 10-15 reps, 1-2 sets
  • PE teacher या certified coach

Phase 3: 10–13 साल — Light Resistance Introduction

लक्ष्य: Proper form में resistance introduction

Light dumbbells, medicine ball, suspension training

Golden Rules:

  • Never "max out"

Supervised free weights, compound movements, sport-specific training

Golden Rules:

  • Certified coach essential
  • Gradual progression — 10% per week max

Safe Youth Resistance Training के 5 Golden Rules

  1. Supervision ALWAYS — हर session में qualified adult
  2. Technique First, Weight Second — perfect form = weight बढ़ाने की condition
  4. No Maximal Lifting — "1 rep max"
  5. Rest and Recovery — 48 घंटे rest same muscle group के बीच

Summary:

  • "Muscular"

Indian Context:

  • ❌Screen time epidemic — कम outdoor activity
  • ❌Organized sports कम — inadequate PE classes
  • ❌Vitamin D deficiency — widespread epidemic

Current Reality: Today's youth are weaker and slower than previous generations. It is high time to incorporate strength-building exercises into youth fitness programs.

Practical Action Plan

  • No equipment needed!

⚽ School / Sports:

  • PE class को seriously लें
  • Cricket, football, swimming — सब osteogenic activities हैं
  • Coach की advice follow करें

🏋️ Gym (12+ साल, supervised):

  • Certified youth trainer से consultation
  • First 2-4 weeks: bodyweight + form
  • Gradual weight introduction

Red Flags —

Maximal lifting (1 rep max)❌ Never
Olympic-style lifts (unsupervised)❌ Never
Training through pain❌ Never
Unsupervised training❌ Never
Anabolic steroids❌ Absolutely forbidden
Excessive volume❌ Never

Nutrition — Training के साथ Essential

Training

  • ✅Protein: 1-1.4g/kg body weight per day
  • ✅Calcium + Vitamin D:
  • ✅Hydration: Training
  • ✅Real Food: protein powder

Supervised resistance training — safe, evidence-based,

"Supervised training stunts nothing. Inactivity stunts everything."
