"Doctor, my child wakes up crying at night with leg pain. Is this growing pain?"
As a Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon, I hear this question almost every week from worried parents. Let me share what EVERY parent should know about nighttime leg pains in children.
WHAT ARE GROWING PAINS?
Despite the name, "growing pains" have NOTHING to do with growth!
They are real muscular pains that affect 1 in 3 children (ages 3-12 years), typically occurring
Late evening or at night 🌙
In BOTH legs (never just one)
Front of thighs, calves, or behind knees
Gone completely by morning ☀️
THE VITAMIN D CONNECTION 🔬
Here's what recent research reveals
86-97% of children with growing pains have VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY
After vitamin D supplementation, pain reduces by 60% within 3 months
Multiple international studies confirm this strong association
This is a GAME-CHANGER! What we thought was "normal and untreatable" is actually manageable with proper vitamin D supplementation.
WHAT CAUSES THE PAIN?
The most likely cause is muscle fatigue from
- Running, jumping, climbing during the day
- Physical activities that tire leg muscles
- Muscles aching at rest (nighttime)
HOW TO RECOGNIZE GROWING PAINS
- Pain in BOTH legs
- Only at night/evening
- Completely gone by morning
- Child plays normally during day
- No limping, no swelling
- Comes and goes (intermittent)
RED FLAGS - SEE DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY: 🚨
- Pain in ONE leg only
- Pain during daytime
- Still hurting in the morning
- Limping
- Fever or weight loss
- Swollen or red joints
- Loss of appetite
WHAT YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW
1️⃣ Get Vitamin D tested - This is the MOST important step!
Most children with growing pains are deficient and respond beautifully to supplementation.
2️⃣ Immediate relief measures
• Gentle massage of painful muscles
• Warm bath before bedtime
• Warm compress on legs
• Comforting and reassurance
3️⃣ Start muscle stretching
• Gentle stretches for thigh and calf muscles
• Morning and evening, 10 minutes each
• Make it fun!
4️⃣ Pain relief (if needed)
• Ibuprofen or Paracetamol
• Only when pain is severe
• Follow age-appropriate dosing
IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER
💚 Growing pains are REAL - not imaginary
💚 They are COMMON - affecting millions of children
💚 They are BENIGN - causing no damage to bones or muscles
💚 They are TREATABLE - especially with vitamin D
💚 Children WILL outgrow them - usually by age 12
DON'T
Restrict your child's physical activities
Tell them it's because they "played too much"
Dismiss their pain
Worry that something is seriously wrong (if typical features)
THE BOTTOM LINE
If your child has typical growing pains, get their vitamin D levels checked. Most children have deficiency, and supplementation can make a HUGE difference in reducing pain intensity and frequency.
Growing pains are common, benign, and very responsive to simple interventions. Your child is not alone, and there IS help available!
